The croque madame is a classic French sandwich that is prepared with sliced bread, cheese, ham, bechamel sauce, gratin in the oven and finally a fried egg is added, it is perfect for breakfast, a snack or a delicious dinner, its preparation has nothing complicated and once you try it, it will become one of your favorites and you will not stop making it. Ingredients
- 4 slices of sliced bread
- Slices of ham to taste
- Emmental cheese to taste (grated, sliced, in pieces or as you prefer)
- 2 fried eggs
- 250 ml. (1 cup) of hot milk
- 40 g. (3 tablespoons) butter
- 30 g. (3/4 cup) all-purpose flour
- Nutmeg to taste
- Salt and pepper to taste
How To Make It
Step 1: We begin the preparation of our croque madame, for this, we prepare our béchamel sauce, in a saucepan over medium heat, add the butter until melted, then add the flour and stir until a paste is formed, then add the hot milk and continue stirring until a thick texture is obtained, add a little salt, a little pepper, a little nutmeg, stir and remove from heat (let cool).
Step 2: In a baking dish place 2 slices of bread, then add some of the bechamel sauce, add the cheese (it can be grated, sliced, in strips or as you prefer), then add slices of ham and cover both breads with the other two slices, add more bechamel sauce on top, emmental cheese and bake in the oven to gratin.
Step 3: When we see that the top of our sandwich is well gratinized, remove from the oven and place the fried egg on top and we have our delicious croquette-madame ready.
Tips To Prepare It
The croque madame recipe is prepared with Emmental or Gruyere cheese, if you don't have it, you can substitute another type of cheese as long as it melts well and is of good quality.
As for the ham to use, I recommend good quality cooked ham for a better result.
Once the béchamel sauce is ready, let it cool so that it takes more consistency.
